People don’t tend to build many castles these days. Something to do with size, inconvenience and not really needing to defend your land from medieval raiders. But castles are great. People should definitely build more castles.

If you’re a castle maniac, here’s the perfect holiday home for you. Santa Marta de Portuzelo is a castle in Portugal built in a late Gothic style. With elements dating all the way back to the twelfth century, Santa Marta has pretty much all yer classic castle features. Here you’ll find turrets, ramparts, arrow slits, stone stairways, a tower and even a chapel – all available to rent on Airbnb.

And that’s not all. Santa Marta also has three living rooms, two dining rooms and a modern kitchen. The property also has a private pool, a watchtower, a sixteenth-century fountain, a tunnel and a garden filled with ornamental orange, lemon, olive, chestnut, palm, cypress, walnut and fig trees. The cost of all this is £671 ($876) per night, which may sound like a lot but isn’t if you bring a load of mates along with you. Santa Marta has 12 bedrooms and sleeps up to 16 people, so if you pack it out and split the cost between your mates, it would cost just £42 ($55) per person, per night. Which is pretty darn reasonable, if you ask us.

Santa Marta de Portuzelo allows pets, has a three-night minimum stay and is around 40 minutes from Porto’s Francisco Sá Carneiro airport. You can find out more and check availability here.

Did you see that you can book out this entire pink castle in Scotland, too?
