The year is 2004, and the choreographer Christian Rizzo is working at a theatre in Istanbul. Out of nowhere, a band of men jump onstage and launch into a folk dance, before promptly vanishing again. The incident made an indelible impression on Rizzo, and served as the inspiration for his latest creation (hence its name, which translates as ‘Based on a True Story’). Backed by two drummers, the eight dancers come together to perform a striking blend of folk and modern styles, maintaining the integrity of the group even as they split up into twos and threes and juggle partners. The 75 minutes will fly by.
