Einstein on the Beach

Occasionally a work of art redefines the boundaries of its genre, opening up new vistas of creative potential. ‘Einstein on the Beach’ is one such work. Upon its premiere in 1976, Philip Glass and Robert Wilson’s opera was heralded for its innovative use of contemporary subject matter, its abstract treatment of this subject and its enormous length (almost five hours – though the audience is permitted to enter and leave as they please). Under the choreographic supervision of the great Lucinda Childs, this new production promises to do full justice to the scope of this monument of 20^th century art.
