An evening of Czech popular songs from a cappella group Accentus. Their variations on Leoš Janácek's pastoral nursery rhymes bring doves, doves and wolves to life, with support from piano and flute. The other composer on the programme, Bohuslav Martinu, left behind his grand operas (he’s previously worked with the New York Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony Orchestra) to compose nursery rhymes for the Primary School Teacher’s Choir in Prague. Perhaps following in his bellringer father’s footsteps, his music returns to the simplicity of childhood, starting with his ‘Dandelion romance’.
