This Friday, La Java will be putting on a riotous Oriental party to mark the collaboration between French dance duo Acid Arab and the label Versatile: an album gathering 13 tracks from the hottest artists in North Africa and the Middle East. Genre names such as ‘bagad disco’ and ‘desert dance’ may sound like they’ve been thought up by a wide-eyed teen on his gap year, but there’s nothing immature about the veteran musicians who contribute to the album. Whether it’s to hear the Kurdish dabke songs of Omar Souleyman (who’s recently collaborated with Björk and Four Tet) or to catch the latest remixes of French world DJs, come if you’re looking for a break from identikit techno and electro nights
