After years spent as a session musician recording with the likes of Flying Lotus and Kendrick Lamar, saxophonist Kamasi Washington has unleashed his magnum opus on the world. His latest solo record, clocking in at nearly three hours and aptly titled ‘The Epic’, is both a nod to traditional jazz and a calculated attempt to imagine the genre’s future. It’s a ruse that seems to have worked: the album’s been lapped up by critics and mainstream music fans alike. This gig is the closing finale of the 2016 Villette Sonique festival.
