Hidden among Northbridge’s heritage rooftops, this tiny but mighty house of fun stands out as a firm favourite. Mechanics Institute is a key voice in Perth’s cocktail conversation, with a quick but quirky board of daily-changing drinks and cocktails. Past hits have included a PB and Jealous with Sheep Dog whisky, macadamia, raspberry and coffee, and a Starward Colada with tropical notes of pineapple, coconut and lime. With an al fresco roof deck, eats by Double Rainbow, sing-out-loud soundtracks and the ability to order an XL one-size-defeats-all Flipside Burger at the bar, you’re in for a guaranteed good time.

Time Out tip: The inventive cocktail menu changes regularly – all the more reason to return!

There’s a reason why Terrarium won Cocktail Bar of the Year WA at the 2023 Australian Bar Awards and Top 20 Bar in the WA Good Food Guide 2025. The sky-high rooftop terrace is a go-to for top-notch cocktails and refined bar snacks, all served under twinkling fairy lights in the heart of the city. Terrarium’s botanical-inspired decor sets the tone for its cocktail menu, featuring drinks named after plants, including the ‘Red Dahlia’ Manhattan, the ‘Primrose’ Lime Curd Margarita, and the non-alcoholic ‘Bird of Paradise’ spiced colada. The 24-page spirits list reads like a bible, and your chosen tipple is sure to pair well with the bar's salted nuts, seasoned olives or grazing boards.
