SYNOPSIS:

Bong Joon-ho brought his unique brand of off-kilter, socially conscious genre cinema to an English speaking audience with last year's Snowpiercer; however, South Korean film enthusiasts world over were already familiar with delightfully pulpy leanings, thanks to 2009's Mother. Working as a riff on the private eye narrative, Mother sees an elderly widow forced to investigate a particularly gruesome murder that her mentally handicapped son has been accused of committing. Like any good P. I. yarn, Mother is full of incompetent cops, betrayal, and a deep sense of cynicism—but like all of Joon-ho's best work, there's a subversive streak running through that plays with your expectations and offers up themes about familial burden that would be too dark and confrontational for a lesser director to address.
