An Education says
The p:ear gallery is thrilled to announce our April/May 2017 showcase of “An Education” a new collection of work by Jeremy Okai Davis accompanied by work from p:ear youth.

An Education is an exploration into some of the different elements that have made me the person that I am today. In using popular culture and family photos I hope to have created paintings that are both personal and engaging. Like my previous paintings, the subject matter and themes are multi layered, all converging to create paintings that are complex but a pleasure to view and invite further and personal investigation. With this body of work I’ve added three dimensional found wood elements that further push the themes of the pieces. The angled structures are an attempt to bring the viewer closer to the paintings. They enter space in a new way and hopefully create a different experience for the viewer.

The work focuses primarily on me as an African-American, Artist, Son, Brother and Friend. Thematically these paintings touch on my personal history as it relates to popular culture, from art, sports to literature. They also attempt to address the current climate in the United States for African-Americans and people of color.
