The event creator says
Alicia McDaid is a Portland, OR based visual, performance and video artist celebrating the emotional ecstasy and anguish of chronic existential crises with a comedically macabre flourish. Utilizing elements of stand up comedy, character acting, musical theater, dance and self-help style over sharing, McDaid shares intimate stories from her life via live, video, social media and interactive performances. She has been a featured performer in the 2013 Movement Research Festival in New York, Portland Institute of Contemporary Art's Time Based Art Festival in 2008, 2009 and 2012 and in the On the Boards' Northwest New Works Festival in Seattle in 2009. Solo visual and video work shows include Portland State University and the Wieden + Kennedy Gallery and video installation in fall 2014 at Marylhurst University.

She will give a presentation about using dance and movement in her work and a performance from the piece she is workshopping right now called "The Workout for the Recently Divorced."

The purpose of this lecture series is to explore and make evident the intersections of art and sports. The connections between two seemingly different things can be a powerful line to draw as it shows the variety of ways a person can exhibit commitment, drive and adaptability in their work. The artists presented in this series share a dedication to interdisciplinary work that crosses lines and disorients stereotypical understandings of artist and athlete identity.

The Art & Sports Lecture Series is co-sponsored by the Portland State University Campus Recreation Center, PSU University Housing and Residence Life, PSU Art & Social Practice MFA program, PSU Speaker's Board and the PSU First Year Experience Freshman Inquiry program. It was inspired by graduate student Rozalyn Crews’ current research about art and sports, and the programming was curated by Crews and conceptualized by artist Molly Sherman. The series is part of Harrell Fletcher's artist residency at the PSU Campus Recreation Center.
