The event creator says
Berliner weisse, a bright, effervescent, mildly tart wheat beer, is a perfect drink for summer. According to legend, when Napoleon's troops invaded Berlin, they found the beer so pleasing that they declared it the "Champagne of the north." With its crisp dryness and bright acidity, it's an apt comparison.

Berliner weisse is also the key ingredient in two of the earliest mixed drinks made with beer. Though often consumed on its own, it's not uncommon to flavor and sweeten Berliner weisse with spirits and syrups. We'll be featuring two of these preparations at Stammtisch, made with Professor Fritz Briem 1809 Berliner Weisse on draft:

Berliner Weisse "mit Strippe" -- Served with Combier Kummel, a complex liqueur flavored with caraway, cumin, and fennel.

Berliner Weisse "mit Schuss" -- Served with B. G. Reynold's woodruff syrup, a local version of the traditional German waldmeister syrup made with herbs grown in Portland.

We will also have copies of Portland author Jacob Grier's new book of beer cocktails, Cocktails on Tap, available for sale, which includes recipes using Berliner weisse and many other styles of beer.
