“Never make your home in a place. Make a home for yourself inside your own head. You'll find what you need to furnish it - memory, friends you can trust, love of learning, and other such things. That way it will go with you wherever you journey.” - Tad Williams

Home becomes wherever you go, a psychological framework we build from the experiences of everyday associations. The place of home is a climate created from a sometimes-fractured ability to move on. We record our emotional spaces through our perceptions and bodily senses. The experience of an object or image through sight or touch allows us to perceive more deeply, etching the space, its objects, and textures into a fuller understanding of our immediate environment.

“When you get into a tight place and everything goes against you, till it seems as though you could not hang on a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn.” - Harriet Beecher Stowe

As artists, we may face stagnation within our process. When we are enclosed or entrapped, we find our most inherent strength. Overcoming perceived boundaries between ourselves and the work, we can remove barriers and emerge into a new space. For each of us, Place becomes a beginning. This exhibition explores our journeys in creating work that speaks of the object-and-image relationship, and the ability to translate emotional states. The Duplex Gallery serves as an intimate canvas to explore the materiality of photography, ceramics, fibers, and mixed media to create an extension of home.
