Jeff Vejr hosted a wine tasting in Portland the other day was so much fun I have decided to put together a mini-version for our Friday night tasting. These are not only great wines, thanks to the winemakers involved they tend to also be on the delightfully unorthodox side of the border. In other words, wines I love and love to share just so I can see the puzzled looks of delight on people's faces as they try them.

If you drop by this Friday you will get to try Jeff Vejr's latest vintage of Golden Cluster "Coury" Semillon along with Chad Stock's Minimus Mueller-Thurgau "Pét-nat," and Minimus Jubilee Vineyard Gamay Rosé. Also in the lineup will be Luke Mathews and Meredith Bell's EST Pinot Noir and the Ovum "Gorge Sound" White that John House made by putting Gewürztraminer under a flor yeast cap à la sherry. There will be a refundable 5.00 tasting fee to try these five unique and captivating wines.

There will also be a dual "super pour" Friday evening, with Jeff Vejr's highly limited (45 cases) 2014 "Ode to Chuck" Semillon going head-to-head with Chad Stock's Minimus No.#16 "Flower" Flor Sauvignon. That's right, Chad Stock is also experimenting with flor and the result is a stunningly brisk and saline wine that will remind more than a few of you of wines from Jerez de la Frontera in Andalusia, Spain. I am limited to just a few six-packs of the "Flower" so Friday night is the night if you would like to give it a whirl.

The "Ode to Chuck" is a special barrel selection that, according to Jeff Vejr, "came out of nowhere. We were just experimenting with blending combinations from the 5 barrels and that blend blew our minds. It wasn't like any other combination. It was singular. It demanded to be a wine of its own. At the time, we didn't really know or care what the new/neutral combo was. It was a lesson in proper cooperage match with varietal, high natural acids, skin contact, and lees contact. The Ode is a wine that needs time, air, and contemplativeness. It will have a very long life."

I had so much fun tasting these wines at Jeff Vejr's tasting, I couldn't resist doing it again. I sure hope you can join us for what promises to be one of the most thought-provoking tastings ever held at Storyteller.
