Original Practice Shakespeare Festival says
Back in Shakespeare's time, the first performance of a new play was a very special event. The audience knew that the actors had not rehearsed, so, with the exception of the role that they had studied, the play would be as brand new to actors as it was to the audience. This was often a revelatory experience, and thus the theatres charged double.

Don't worry - we're not doubling our prices (though multiplying by zero isn't nearly as bad as dividing by zero)....

Mix together one dead father (now a ghost), a mother that quickly marries your murderous uncle, a complicated love life, two sycophantic childhood chums, a company of actors, a duel, poison, murder, madness, and the skull of a dead clown. Add pirates. Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.
