Hickory Mertsching And Charlie Haughey says
We are excited to announce a very special show premiering all new work by Portland artists Hickory Mertsching and Charlie Haughey.

Hickory Mertsching is a well established Oregon painter who recieved a BFA from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design in 1996. He worked primarily in sculpture and metal fabrication until 2005 when he switched focus to 2D art with drawing and oil on canvas.
In this new body of work, Mertsching has delved into traditional still life painting and an exploration of manmade detritus subtly colliding with the natural environment. This exploration came about through years of observation and fascination of the overlap that occurs between inorganic remains and nature. Within the still life, he strives to indicate a balance of the animate and inanimate, whether through the addition of a living creature or a symbol of man’s toil. Capturing subjects of arid stones, wood, manmade vessels, machinery, birds, and animals, a narrative of climate change, sustenance, and commoditization of the environment is created.

Charlie Haughey is a master carpenter and photographer who is a resident artist at ADX Portland. We will be exhibiting his large wooden spheres hand-built using only the scrap wood in the ADX community wood shop. This will be the largest sculptural exhibit Screaming Sky has ever hosted, displaying spheres up to 48" in diameter!
