What style can I enter?

The short answer is any style. The long answer is any American, Belgian, English, German, Irish or Scottish Ale - Pale, Amber, Red, Black, Blonde, Brown, Wheat, IPA, Stout, Porter, Strong, Cream, Rye, Bitter, Sweet Stout, Oatmeal, Old Ale.

Regular IPA is generally discouraged. CDA and variations on regular IPA are OK. There are a lot of competitions going on right now, so if folks are already planning a brew, perhaps they can switch out some hops for NZ/AU and enter the same brew in multiple competitions. Nothing that takes longer than a standard 2-3 week brewing period, plus no wild/Brett.

Are there any restrictions on where the beer was brewed?

Brew-on-premise for this specific competition, such as at FH Steinbart, Portland U-Brew, Let’s Brew are OK.

Is there an entry fee? How many bottles do I need to submit?

There is NO ENTRY FEE. Two bottles of at least 11oz each. Standard bottle identification form on each bottle. Do not tape entry or ID forms to the bottles -- use rubber bands.
Can be delivered to Coalition Brewing during regular taproom hours, FH Steinbart during regular business hours, or arrange delivery to John Lovegrove.

How is the judging done?

Judging will be done at Coalition Brewing over the May 6-8 Weekend. There will be 4-5 judges, one from The Big Legrowlski, one from Coalition, and at least 2 other BJCP certified judges. Feedback will be provided to all entrants by email. If there are less than 10 entries, there will be one flight with one winner selected. If there are between 10 and 20 entries, there will be two flights, with the best two from each flight going to a second round of judging. If there are more than 20 entries, there will be three flights with the best beer from each flight going to a final round. The judging is done blind.

What are the prizes?

The winning beer will be scaled up and brewed, in collaboration with the home brewer if possible, at Coalition Brewing. The beer will be released at the Down Under Hop Smackdown at The Big Legrowlski on June 16 during PDX Beer Week and in Coalition’s taproom.
