Portland Women's Film Festival (aka POW Fest) says
In July, we are celebrating fearless women who take print media into their own hands.

JASAD AND THE QUEEN OF CONTRADICTIONS (2011) is a short documentary about Lebanese poet and writer Joumana Haddad who has stirred controversy in the Middle East for having founded “Jasad” (the Body), an erotic quarterly Arabic-language magazine. Despite debates, having her work banned, threats and the lack of funds, one passionate woman shows no signs of slowing her small steps toward a “sexual revolution” in the Arab world. (40 minutes)

GRRLYSHOW (2000) is a powerful and rebellious message from voices often left unheard. Featuring the creators of Bamboo Girl, Hues, Pagan’s Head, Java Turtle, Plotz, Bust and Bitch. This is an amazing look back at Zinesters challenging mainstream media. (18 minutes)

Tickets are available for a suggested donation of $5-$10 at the door. Any amount over $5 will go directly to support the work of POWFest.

Doors open at 6:30pm. No one will be turned away due to lack of funds. Attendees will also be entered into a drawing for a POWFest Membership!

POWMonthly is a series dedicated to showcasing films directed by women. It provides year-round visibility to the wide range of high quality, thought-provoking films women create, and gives audiences an opportunity interact with the filmmakers. By doing so, POWMonthly supports the careers and leadership of women in film.

Screenings take place on the fourth Monday of every month at Clinton Street Theater and proceeds fund POWFest’s efforts to increase the number of women in leadership roles in media by providing resources, education and visibility.
