Forget the corny green beer and get a good shot of the real McCoy, make that the real McCann! Author and true Irishman Dermot McCann will read from his book of short stories at the Gigantic Taproom & Champagne Lounge. Readings at 6:30 and 8:00. Signed copies will be available for purchase.

In the true tradition of Irish storytelling, McCann’s Shorts takes you by the hand and leads you on the nostalgic, often hilarious and sometimes tragic journey of one man through the second half of the 20th Century. Mother meets father in war-torn Belfast. Boys will be boys in small-town Canada in the ’50s. Near misses and perfect endings. The foreshadowing—and numbing experience—of loss. This collection delivers them all, in an original and authentic voice informed by memory and a thousand verbal retellings.

“McCann manages to combine a talent for lyrical story-telling with revealing personal insights and glimpses of a wicked sense of humour. Reading this collection’s a bit likeeating popcorn -start with just one story and then you won’t want to stop. He’s compelling. Maybe it has something to do with his being Irish.”

Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 1950, McCann emigrated to Canada at the age of three, and made his home in Guelph, Ontario from 1955 to 1993. Since graduating from the University of Guelph in 1970, he’s made a living as a teacher, carpenter/contractor, artist and writer. He currently lives in Victoria, British Columbia
