Doesn't risk line the pathway to rock 'n' roll? Even though Dan Stiles started his career with no money, no contacts, and no formal training, he retained the unbridled hope that creativity would carry him and, as his title reaffirms, One Thing Leads to Another. Now, as an internationally acclaimed designer and illustrator, Dan Stiles mixes his knack for symbolism, commitment to simplicity, and striking use of color to produce narratives for Beck, Arctic Monkeys, Sonic Youth, and hundreds more. Stiles has also embarked on international advertising campaigns, book jacket design, and children's illustration. One Thing Leads to Another not only traces his expanding career path, it teaches budding artists how to make an image that springs from the page and reverberates with their audience.

One Thing Leads to Another is filled with insider insights for designers and creative professionals. When Stiles saw the need to put his pen down and learn graphics programs, he voraciously read manuals and worked his way up from irrelevant to indispensable. When he noticed an abundance of black permeating his work, he nixed the color and found a palette so bright it beamed. When he saw his funds dwindling, he implemented overprinting, a recognizable yet inexpensive technique central to his designs. Stiles is proof that beneath adversity lies ingenuity beckoning to be uncovered.

Over the past twenty years, Dan Stiles has collaborated with everyone from indie bands to major corporations in creating posters, identities, advertising, custom packaging, and limited edition collectable art and merchandise. His clients range from Arctic Monkeys, Sonic Youth, and Wilco to the X Games, IBM, and Old Navy. He draws from a broad swath of influences including classic skateboard graphics, album covers, modern art and design, children's books, comics, psychedelia, and vintage advertising. Dan recently published two children's books, Put on Your Shoes! and Today I'm Going to Wear . . . He lives with his wife and daughters in Portland, Oregon. Website:
