Nicky Kriara has always been surrounded by art. With a graphic designer and painter mother, she grew up surrounded by visual inspiration. During after school hours she was mentored by Venezuelan artist Margarita Leon. “She was a tiny, bright woman that carved large sculptures with a chainsaw, told great stories, and walked around with a parakeet named Sunshine on her shoulder,” Kriara remembers. She experimented with every medium possible in her studio, and when she got into painting, was influenced by the work of Leon’s husband, an oil painter.

“Props and Relics” features Kriara’s sculpted scenic paintings. Plaster and wood mimic urban environments while layers and textures of paint create aged surfaces that imitate building walls. It’s here that her background in sculpture, installation, and photography show influence. It’s in set design for animation studios (such as Laika) that she began to use plaster on wood, and large scale art has always been a form she gravitates towards. Her paintings become a form of installation, and her photographs are an observation of shapes, colors and textures to use in paintings. Images of rust, moss, graffiti, telephone poles, peeling paint, and dirt on buildings are what catches her eye, elements that all gravitate to surface.

So how do props and relics serve as subjects for Kriara? “I think of this painting series as paying tribute to the backdrops of the dramas of daily life in an urban landscape,” she says. “I was thinking about disasters that can happen in one's life, and what remains and what fades away after the disaster is over. I often use the image of a circle to represent a being, life force, soul, or seed.” Props and Relics refers to the content of these shapes. Props are the temporary facades, and relics are the imagery/soul that withstand time.

Artist Reception is from 7 t0 10 on April 3rd and the show runs through the month.
