Sema Ceremony Of The Whirling Dervishes Presented By Moa says
"Lovers find secret places
inside this violent world
where they make transactions
with beauty." ~ Mevlana Jelaluddin Rumi

Rumi was born in the time of Genghis Khan. He was no stranger to violent times, his family left their home in Afghanistan just ahead of the invasion of Balkh. Growing up on the road in the shadow of his father, a great Islamic Sufi master and scholar, Rumi was exposed to many of the wisest scholars and mystics of his time. Finally settling in central Anatolia (Konya), he went on to become one of the world's finest exemplars of Islam as the Religion of Love, demonstrating through a lifetime of words and actions how Peace is possible on a Path of Love.

The afternoon event will feature the prayer dancing of the Whirling Dervishes, a ceremony presented as it has been for over 700 years. In their traditional felt hats and flowing white garments, turners whirl in unison, attuning to the music of the heart.

"Something opens our wings. Something makes boredom and hurt disappear. Someone fills the cup in front of us: We taste only sacredness."-Mevlana Jelaluddin Rumi

Rumi was the original whirling dervish and is widely known for his remarkable and timeless poetry. Yet the Mevlevi tradition is alive Portland today! Sema is a powerful ritual of music, poetry, and synchronized movement that embodies the journey of the soul, weaving visual and musical elements into an experiential engagement with the Divine. The Mevlevi Orchestra will accompany the ceremony with authentic classical Turkish Sema music.
