Legendary jazz pianist McCoy Tyner should need no introduction. Tyner’s blues-based piano style, replete with sophisticated chords and an explosively percussive left hand has transcended conventional styles to become one of the most identifiable sounds in improvised music. Tyner rose to fame as the pianist for some of John Coltrane's most revered albums such as My Favorite Things, Live! at the Village Vanguard, and A Love Supreme before founding his own band in the late 1960's. Over the years, Tyner has collaborated with jazz giants such as Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, Hank Mobley, Stanley Turrentine, Gary Bartz and countless others, and has released nearly 80 albums as a leader. He is the recipient of five Grammy® Awards and in 2002 became an NEA Jazz Master. To this day, Tyner continues to leave his mark on generations of improvisers, and yet remains a disarmingly modest and spiritually directed man. He returns to Portland for the first time in a decade with his band featuring Gary Bartz (saxophone), Gerald Cannon (bass) and Francisco Mela (drums) in what is surely a can't-miss occasion.
