"Advice About Fire"
Amory Abbott at Stumptown Downtown

Inspired by the wilderness and mythology, Amory Abbott’s charcoal drawings interrogate a romanticized relation to nature and spirituality, regarding the deep, mysterious corners of the forest as places of ancient magic. His work offers fantasy alongside ecology and imagines new systems that knit the world together. These immersive environments leave evidence of event, consequence, intervention, and regeneration. His most recent series, "Advice About Fire," uses the landscape of the Pacific Northwest, specifically old-growth forests, to imagine ways one might experience and reflect upon the power and enchantment of wildfires.

Born in Indiana in a house along a creek, Abbott’s ceramicist mother and sculptor father raised him in Bloomington, and on the road to art fairs. He earned a BFA from Herron School of Art and Design, and later taught undergraduate drawing and illustration courses there. In 2014 he relocated to Portland, OR, enrolling at Pacific Northwest College of Art to earn his MFA in Visual Studies.
