For her reception this Thursday, September 8 (5:30–7pm) at Stumptown Downtown, abstract painter Mary Weisenburger has invited Modern Ass Jazz Singers to perform.

Modern Ass Jazz Singers are an artist collective out of SE Portland. For 5 years they've teetered on the boundaries of extreme and technical improvisation, curating several various musical acts that explore different sonic environments. The newest subsection of the collection, The Yard, features artists David Owen Tevlin & Bernie James Dively and their post jazz instrumental sounds. Think guitar drones and polyrhythmic frenetic drumming!

For Topographical Tints, her first solo exhibition at Stumptown Downtown, Mary Weisenburger invites us to contemplate what is abstract and what is landscape by combining elements like color, light, and brush mark with oil paint. Intrigued by how we see, she uses the visual information art and science give us to better imagine how our biology works.

“Color grants me the ability to draw meaningful relationships within forms. It is my main aesthetic device, a tool that I use to promote serendipity. Color is what liberates me to form the romantic, compositional disasters that are my paintings.” —Mary Weisenburger

Originally from Inland-Northwest Washington, Mary Weisenburg made a home in Portland, OR, in the fall of 2011 to pursue her Bachelors of Fine Art in Painting at Pacific Northwest College of Art. During her studies, she traveled abroad to the UK for a residency at York St. John University. There she developed her love for landscape, furthering it through geometric abstraction and the construction of undecidable imagery. Weisenburger, who is also a Painter, Instructor, and Product Specialist for Gamblin Artist Colors. co, has shown in many Portland’s establishments these past five years.
