The Hollywood Theatre says
Wicky wicky wild, wicky wild, wicky wicky wild wild wild west!

We’re going straight to the Wild Wild West; a fantasy, action, comedy, steampunk-western (sure that’s a genre) from 1999. This CGI super-spectacle is set in 1869 and stars Will Smith as a special government agent. That agent’s name? West. Jim West. He’s been sent on a mission to (you guessed it) the West. While the film finished first during its opening weekend, it would go on to nearly sweep the Razzies with its 8 wins and 12 nominations! Smith was quoted as saying the film was a “personal low” but we like to think he meant “personal whoa! Cool movie!”

The charmingly chatty James T West (Smith) and master of gadgetry/disguise Artemus Gordon (Kevin Kline) are special agents on assignment from the government. They find themselves in Utah, tracking down the diabolical genius and ex-Confederate Dr. Arliss Loveless (Royal Academy of Dramatic Art alum, Kenneth Branagh). Scorned by the Civil War, Loveless is plotting to kill the president and also holding scientists hostage. The daughter of one of those scientists (Salma Hayek) joins West and Gordon, which somehow only complicates matters as she insinuates herself into their plans. The three battle it out with goons, gadgets and of course an enormous, lethal, robotic tarantula.

Wild Wild West utilizes cliche tropes seen in buddy-cop films, over-the-top sarcasm and a ton of 90’s CGI. The plot is often ignored and the jokes are off-beat, thusly making the movie perfect for a Hecklevision screening!
