:::Penn Sardin: an homage:::
In the first half of the 20th century many Breton rural woman were forced to leave their households in their early teens to work as maids in cities or to work in Sardine canneries, where they were forbidden to speak their native language, Celtic Breton. These factory workers were negatively nicknamed Penn Sardin, a Breton term meaning ‘Sardine Head’.
Some of these women, inspired by ideals of communism and workers’ self-management, fought for equality and a better life in a famous and long-lasting strike in Douarnenez in 1924.
This feast is in their homage, and in homage of working class women fighting for equality around the world.

This Event is a pop-up hosted by Olympia Oyster Bar & Wonderlust Dinners. It is a collaboration between Liz White (cook and seafood enthusiast) and Simon Lowry (Breton-American cider enthusiast); bringing a shared passion for seafood to you through their own northwest twist on Breton food.

Yec’hed mat--Breton for ‘cheers’.
