Dominating the Baixa from its squareatthetopofAvenidados Aliados, the City Hall vies with the nearby Torre dos Clérigos as a symbol of Porto. Its foundation stone was laid in 1920 (earlier city assemblies took place down in the Ribeira), but was only fully occupied in 1957. Book ahead for the one - hour guided tours; at other times you can still peek into the marble and granite entrance all.
