The best dishes you can try at Prague’s Christmas markets

From the end of November, Christmas markets start appearing in the different town squares of Prague, adding even more magic to the already fairytale-like city.

With its towering Christmas tree, twinkling lights and historical buildings, Old Town Square has the biggest and liveliest market in Prague. Meanwhile, Wenceslas Square, Náměstí Míru (Peace Square), Tyl’s Square and Smíchov also host markets, all starting on different days. If you’re looking to beat the crowds, those smaller events might be a good idea. Nevertheless, you should make the most of what’s on, including light shows and carol-singing, wherever you find yourself. Besides the typical wooden huts, nativity scenes and festive ornaments, look out for handmade arts and crafts, including the delicate glassware Czechia is famous for. And, crucially, you have to make the most of the food (delicious details below). With British Airways Holidays, you can explore a variety of Christmas market destinations like this one, so if Prague's the one for you, read on and get booking.

To give you a taste of Prague in London, we’re bringing Hotboozapalooza back on November 2. Try four mouth-watering, warmed-up twists on your favourite boozy drinks inspired by Salzburg, Prague, Krakow and Cologne. For just £20 you could be enjoying a night on the outdoor terrace, dancing to feel-good tunes and sampling delicacies from around Europe. Oh, and to really immerse you in these vibrant cultures, there will be designated activities for each city. Buy tickets here.

And here’s what you can expect to feast on when you book your British Airways Holidays trip to Prague…

1. Vánočka

If you spot a braided bread, adorned with raisins and almonds, that’s vánočka. This sweet bread, which is a bit like a cross between brioche and challah, gets its name from the word Vánoce, which means Christmas in Czech. During the sixteenth century, there was a time when only bakers were able to make it. But people reclaimed the recipe for themselves in a gentle mutiny. Nowadays, most families have their own vánočka recipe handed down by different generations, perhaps going all the way back to the seventeenth century.

2. Christmas cookies

From soft gingerbread cookies (perníčky) to crescent-shaped vanilla biscuits (vanilkové rohlíčky), Czech Christmas cookies aren’t just for the kids. Indulge yourself a little with these traditional treats while scouring for stocking fillers. Other popular choices include jam-filled linzer cookies (linecké cukroví) and no-bake beehive cookies (vosí hnízda), which will surely satisfy your sweet tooth.

3. Roasted chestnuts

Does it get more Christmassy than this? Nat King Cole literally sang about them in ‘The Christmas Song’. Another classic snack, roasted chestnuts will enrich the festive spirit, both with their taste and smell. Make sure to pick up a bag to carry around with you as you explore Prague’s most interesting makers and vendors.

4. Klobása

Originating from the mid-nineteenth century, fried carp with potato salad is the traditional Czech Christmas dish people eat at home. While you likely won’t find it at the market, try klobása (Czech sausages) if you’re craving a savoury snack. Served with bread and ketchup or mustard, they are an Christmas market fave in Czechia. Consider getting a pint of beer to accompany your dish – although it’s not the most festive drink, when you’re in Prague there’s no bad time to grab a beer.

5. Svařák, punč and medovina

Svařák (mulled wine) is a true festive classic in many countries and Czechia is no exception. Also, punč (punch, of course), made of alcohol, sugar, lemon and spices, is popular in the local markets for sipping on while you stroll. Finally, you’ve got medovina, a deliciously warming honey wine, aka mead. Most producers sell it in bottles, so you can add a Czech touch to your Christmas gifts and share the love a little.

Looking for somewhere to stay?

Hermitage Hotel Prague is a four-star hotel that's the perfect place to unwind after exploring the markets. While it may be slightly further out of the centre, it's great for a bit of peace and quiet from the hustle and bustle of the city.
