Pollokshaws Road neighbourhood: What to eat, drink and do
History has it that Pollokshaws Road was once home to a merry band of Flemish weavers â known as the âQueer Folkâ â who were brought over to work in the city during the 19th century by local landowners. These days itâs still a thriving creative hub, threading down Glasgowâs Southside and linking up the districts of Govanhill, Strathbungo and Shawlands. Rows of sandstone tenements loom over traffic separated by wide pavements, behind which stand ornate townhouses designed by Alexander âGreekâ Thomson. Thereâs a juicy chunk of Pollokshaws Road where bars, cafeÌs and boutiques jostle for space; pick it up from Allison Street and wander down past Queenâs Park. Since itâs a largely residential area, thereâs a distinct feel of community â something thatâs enhanced by the indie businesses that have popped up over the past few years. In particular itâs a brunch haven, with queues leaking out of living-room-sized cafeÌs come rain or shine. You can also expect to find organic fruit and veg at Stalks & Stems, a fresh produce emporium with a florist next door, and (almost) a different coffee shop for every day of the week. Itâs not all hipster territory, though. Punters tired of mustachioed baristas and bar staff will be cheered by the decent selection of old man pubs complete with smoked-glass windows.
