Linneaâs Garden
"General stores" in Korea usually refer to shops that carry a wide variety of miscellaneous goods, often literally whatever the owner wishes to sell, typically located in a small town. And for that, you may easily lose track of time after you walk into these venues. In the past two years or so, lots of new general stores have made its introduction, but unfortunately, most of them seem to sell similar products mostly imported from mainland China. For all those that are tired of these factory made props and looking for a one-of-a-kind general store, Linneaâs Garden might be the answer. Just as I was about to get really tired of âgeneral store-crawl,â Linneaâs Garden came to me and took my heart with every single one of its unique and rare little things. Each and every piece seems like it has its own story, and the warm ambiance of the store instantly melts your cold city-soul as if youâre deep in the woods visiting a little friendly witchâs secret house. Quietly hidden in the back alley of Mangwon Dong, Linneaâs Garden is full of all kinds of cute little items; placemats, coasters, forks, teacups, snowballs, finger puppets, ornaments, etc. Linneaâs selection is unique and rather intriguingâit may have you wonder,âHow did he/she get this? From where?â The answer is "all over the world"âthrough the ownerâs acquaintances living in France, Japan, Tibet, China, Taiwan. With the selection, you can obviously tell the ownerâs love for witches, animals, and glass pieces. The enormous br
Namdo Sikdang
Hidden away on an alley near Chundong Theatre is this restaurant without a sign outside. There is only one item in the menu, Chueo-tang (loach soup). Still, it is always packed with people waiting diligently for their pot of soup. As this 50-year- old hanok restaurant only serves one dish, your order will be served quite quickly, by the gleeful employees. The thick broth chueo-tang may remind you of haejangguk, Koreaâs celebrated hang-over soup. The reason behind it, as an employee said, is because they use beef leg bone broth as the base. Dried radish greens, beef bones, loach and perilla seeds, the ingredients that go into making the delicacy, are all locally sourced. Namdo Sikdang follows the Jeolla-do provinceâs method of cooking chueo-tang, which involves using dwenjang (fermented soy bean paste) and ground mudfish. Ground perilla seeds are provided on the side, so that you can add as much of it as you want. Together with cucumber and cabbage kimchi, itâs a meal that gives you a homey and comforting feel. The owner of this restaurant is now almost 80 years old. She comes out to her beloved sikdang every morning and grinds the perilla seeds herself âalong with the rich flavors of the broth, her sincerity is served in every hearty bowl at this humble joint.
Yurimmyeon
Some may remember Yurimmyeon as a restaurant sought out by Doh Min-jun, the main character of the Korean drama My Love from the Starplayed by Kim Soo-hyun. Founded in 1962, Yurimmyeon is in fact already 55 years old and considered a veteran in the area. The media exposure and history of this place, naturally, invites mixed crowds; you will see some young couples seated inside, with the rest of the clientele which is a lot older. Despite the age, the restaurant is simple, clean and quite modern â the pinewood furniture is well-arranged while one wooden menu board hangs on one of the walls. Every day, the owner comes in at the break of dawn to prepare the dayâs noodles. The buckwheat noodles and the bibim (spicy, broth-less) buckwheat noodles are the most popular items during the summer; during the colder seasons, the warm buckwheat noodles and the noodle bowl soup will warm your belly up. The combination of the clear soybean-based broth, soft buckwheat noodles and chrysanthemum greens in the warm buckwheat noodles make for a simple yet hearty meal.
Luii
Luii a restaurant run by Yeo Kyung-rae, one of Koreaâs celebrity Chinese chefs (the power-four are Lee Yeon-bok, Yoo Bang-nyung, Jin Saeng-yong and Yeo Kyung-rae). Yeo, which translates to âwomanâ is pronounced in Chinese as luii, hence the name of the restaurant. Although you might believe that dining at a restaurant run by this power-Chinese chef would result in draining your pocket and leaving the place with a slightly empty stomach, you need not worry. With this restaurant, Yeo tried to bring high quality Chinese dishes at extremely affordable prices (upon getting a meal here, you may even compare Luii to a fancy Chinese restaurant at a five star hotel, food wise at least). Luiiâs specialties are Sharkâs Fin and Fo Tiao Qiang (Which poetically translates to âBuddha Jumps Over the Wallâ), but their Sweet and Sour Pork (Tangsuyuk) and Pal Jin Chow Mein are also scrumptious. They used to have the Sweet and Sour Pork fried once and refried right before itâs served, but because it resulted in a hard crust the chef decided it was better to fry it just once, right when the order comes in. The fried bits are light and fluffy, with an enjoyable chewy texture. The brown sweet and sour sauce that comes in a side bowl is quite strong in flavor and almost very aromatic with all the fruits and vegetable that went into making it. Our other favorite, Pal Jin Chow Mien, is something you canât try elsewhere in Korea. As its name suggests, (âpalâ meaning âeightâ) there are 8 different in
HyunSangSo
HyunSangSo, in Korean it means a photo processing laboratory, more commonly known as a print shop. Thatâs what this place was before transforming into one of the most unique cafĂ©s in Seoul. A quick word of mouth has not only put this cafĂ© on the maps of many Seoulites, it has even brought the neighborhood some new attention. The all white cafĂ© has a subtle warm tone to it, especially from the lamps lighting up a warm yellow hue. The windows are covered with a light curtain, letting in enough light to brighten up the whole place, but making sure none of the subtleties are lost from any intense sunlight. The wide open space, with white wooden flooring, consists only of 10 round tables, a few exhibition pedestals and the cafĂ© of course. The middle is left wide open, almost making us expect the bride and father come in for the father-daughter dance of an all white wedding. As we are seated, the waitress hands over an envelope. Within in are two folded papers, containing a memo written in pencil. At this point, it really does feel like an invitation to a wedding, just until you read what it says. Itâs the menu to the cafĂ©. All different types of coffee are priced at 7,000 won while the desserts are 5,000 won. Both the âSea Salt Cream Espressoâ and the âChocoCream on the Milkâ contain a little bit of salt to strengthen its innate sweetness. The âChocoCream on the Milkâ is thicker than chocolate milk but lighter than a hot chocolate, making for a great chocolate drink. The âApple Cr
Café Bongja
Maybe I was lucky, but on the day I went, there were more dogs than there were people. Mangwon-dongâs CafĂ© Bongja gets its name from the ownerâs beloved Welsh corgi, Bongja. Along with the goofball corgi, there is another dog who always roams around the cafĂ©. A mascot duo, these two are often the reason the patrons frequent this place. As for the cafĂ© menu, the drinks served here are on an inexpensive side, while you are free to bring in food from outside. The green grape and grapefruit juice (6,500 won) and grapefruit ade (6,500 won) are quite refreshing.
Sik-Soul
Located in Dogok-dong, Sik-Soul has a space reserved for customers who bring their dogs. All of the dishes here are pretty good, especially considering the price. The sweet and spicy chilli tuna tortilla (20,000 won) and the large pan of okonomiyaki with crunchy bean sprouts (19,000 won) are great to be shared with a group. There are also a few beef dishes including the beef bibimjangbap (7,000 won) and Gyeongsang-do style beef and radish Soup (7,000 won).
Bichon Pocha
Their mascot is two Bichon Frise furballs. Too cute? We agree. Bichon Pocha located in Shinsa-dong is so popular amongst animal lovers in Seoul that the whole bar is swarmed by dogs of all breeds, especially during dinner time. But, is it a real bar, you ask? They are open till 6am, and has a wide open space along with a terrace. Often, you can even spot some Korean celebrities hanging out with their human and animal friends, as well. Their main menu is seafood, including steamed octopus and fresh sea squirt (35,000 won). With all the fish tanks installed in the restaurant, itâs always good to ask the server whatâs in season. If sea food isnât your thing, there is the spicy stir-fried pork bone dish (20,000 won).
Behind Yellow
Nonhyeon-dongâs Behind Yellow is a well-known dog-friendly restaurant. Theyâve got great services geared towards dogs, and also make some mouth-watering dishes for humans. Inside the venue is a small terrace area with four tables dedicated to those with a four-legged friend. They even offer comfortable dog seats that are fully equipped with railings which prevent a dog from falling off the chair. Note that while medium and large breeds are also allowed inside, but must be leashed at all times. Behind Yellowâs specialty is the Roast Beef Gorgon (19,000 won). Itâs a rich, creamy pasta dish with Australian beef tenderloin and a lot of gorgonzola cheese. Their fresh ricotta spinach pizza (22,000 won) is also a popular menu item.
Urban Dog
A 100 square meter indoor warm water swimming pool for dogs, a spacious pet hotel and even agility equipments in the 595 square meters Urban Dog pet cafĂ©. Itâs definitely not a normal neighborhood pet cafĂ©. The pet hotel remains clean and you can be assured of your pets safety and comfort from the security camera thatâs been installed. The swimming pool also includes wooden floors so both pets and owners wonât slip. Itâs truly a place âJust for pet loversâ and you will feel that atmosphere once youâre inside. Itâs only been a couple of months since its grand opening but the cafĂ© has been receiving high praise through word of mouth. They offer free training services every Wednesday, while the cafĂ© itself is only open for small and mid-sized breeds.
MungMungMung
Itâs a great place for pets to have fun, with its wide space and small obstacles. The space is large enough that most dogs can comfortably run around and enjoy themselves. Thereâs even a small section for dogs under 4kgâs (who may feel a little frightened by all the energy). Above all, however, the menu at MungMungMung is what sets this pet cafĂ© apart from all the others. While most mundane pet cafĂ©s have limited choices in drinks and snack, MungMungMung goes all out with items like yuza sauce steak, roasted ginger pork and even side dishes like chicken potato kara-age. Everything considered, the food is also quite tasty. They also serve homemade cookies, sweet potatoes for dessert and even snacks for your pet. The cafĂ© doesnât charge an entrance fee, but each person in your group will be required to order a drink. The only downside is that large dog breeds are not permitted into the cafĂ©. If you are getting your dog a haircut, the cafĂ© will indulge your dog to a free carbonated spa treatment for free. MungMungMung has 2 outlets, one in Songpa-gu and the other in Yongin city.
SangSang Puppy Café
This cafĂ© is known for being well organized. The interior is divided into 3 sections: the entrance, the meeting room and finally, the play room. Once you enter the cafĂ© through the entrance, you will be asked to go into the meeting room, where you and your pet will be introduced to other pets that arrived before you. Once your pet feels comfortable with the interaction, you and your pet will be allowed to enter the larger play room, where all the dogs mingle and play together. At the entrance, you will also be asked to take your shoes off, wear a pair of provided slippers and clean your hands with hand-sanitizers (also provided). Only after these sanitary procedures, will you be allowed to enter. Youâll understand why from the cleanliness of the cafĂ© as well as how well the dogs get along with each other. SangSang also provides pet hotel services that include âHotel-ingâ (they keep your dog for 24 hours) and âSchoolingâ (they keep your dog for a couple of hours). But before they accept your dog, you will be required to keep your dog at the cafĂ© for 1 to 2 hours to see if the dog is able to cope well with the environment and fellow dogs. Once your pet passes the âtestâ, you will be able to use the âHotel-ingâ and âSchoolingâ services. Although it may seem as though the cafĂ© requires a lot from your pet, itâs to make sure that you can trust the services they offer.
