Eight ways to tell a real New Yorker from a fake New Yorker

Eight ways to tell a real New Yorker from a fake New Yorker

NYC is a city of transplants, interns and tourists with a few born-and-bred New Yorkers mixed into the bunch. Regardless of which category you fall into here are eight telltale ways to tell a real New Yorker from a fake New Yorker.  RECOMMENDED: 16 ways you know someone is an NYC newbie, according to New Yorkers 1. Real New Yorkers will sit by the rail at all costs. Sure, it's a little weird sliding down into that warm seat once someone gets up, but it's a small price to pay for the freedom the rail provides. And if you catch an empty train, all the better, kickback against the rail and relax.   Photograph: Shutterstock   2. Fake New Yorkers will wait for the walk sign. Is there an explosion of jaywalking tickets being handed out everywhere else in this country? Seriously, why is it so taboo to not just use common sense and cross when it's clear everywhere else?   Photography: Wendy Connett 3. Fake New Yorkers are still offered mixtapes in Times Square. A real New Yorker will walk right past free of harassment, but a fake New Yorker will be sensed and handed a mixtape. Never take the mixtape.  Photograph: Paul Wagtouicz 4. Real New Yorkers will have a strong opinion about the city's best burger.   Whether a chain like Five Guys or Shake Shack or a New York institution like Minetta Tavern you need to have a strong enough opinion that you're willing to fight with your friends.    Photograph: Shutterstock   5. Fake New Yorkers won't eat from food carts.   It may seem dir

The "Fake Book Covers on the Subway" guy is back and they're even better this time

The "Fake Book Covers on the Subway" guy is back and they're even better this time

It’s usually the case that the original is better than the sequel, but we dare say that "Fake Book Covers on the Subway PART TWO" manages to top the (already pretty funny) original video. The first was excellent, but the follow-up benefits greatly from the Running Late team having to top themselves. No longer were they able to depend just on shock value, they had to get even more creative with the book titles and ended up really knocking it out of the park.

Meet the adorable new baby monkey at the Bronx Zoo

The Bronx Zoo welcomed the birth of a Bolivian gray titi monkey last month and it was finally introduced to the world this week. Though there's no word on whether or not the monkey was proudly held up by its father and shown to the entire kingdom (aka the World of Birds exhibit), there is some pretty cute video of it hanging out.  Watch it below.

Watch vintage footage of New York City split screen with modern maps

While working on another story recently, we came across this old footage of old footage (meta, right?) of New York City that we’d never seen before. Aside from the claim that it’s the “oldest footage of New York City ever” what really makes this video cool and unique is the addition of modern maps to show you exactly where the respective videos would be located today.  Check it out below!

This video of the NYC subway system in the ‘90s is creepy and hilarious

See if you can spot the differences between the New York City subway today and this New York Newsday video from the ‘90s. Here’s a hint: hardly anything. Aside from a move from tokens it would appear that all our resources were then diverted to HD cameras. Nonetheless, this video plays out like a Kyle Mooney Saturday Night Live bit and as great a parody video of the ‘90s as you can get, despite it not being a parody.

New web series Thousand Dollar Listing shows you the hottest in BK real estate

New web series Thousand Dollar Listing shows you the hottest in BK real estate

Million dollar homes are so passé. If you want to be taken seriously you gotta drop some zeros and get in on those thousand dollar homes. And there's no bigger player in the game right now than Noah Kaplan of Thousand Dollar Listing (a parody of Bravo's Million Dollar Listing). He’s got his ear to the ground and finger on the pulse of Brooklyn’s booming real estate market. If Episode One of his new show is any indication, there are some sweet thousand dollar listings up for grabs right now.

12 gorgeous photos of this year's Sakura Matsuri at Brooklyn Botanic Garden

For a select few the word “blossom” conjures up images of Mayim Bialik or Joey Lawrence, but for most everyone else it’s a sign that spring has finally sprung. This past weekend, thousands of visitors flocked to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden to celebrate the annual cherry blossom festival, Sakura Matsuri. In addition to blossoms in full bloom, the 35th edition of the festival brought out countless cosplayers to celebrate the Japanese tradition, hanami, and celebrate every moment of cherry blossom season. Seven things you can do naked in NYC

Seven things you can do naked in NYC

The weather is finally warm—and, let's be honest, those clothes are restricting—so strip down to your birthday suit and enjoy these nude (or scantily-clad) happenings around New York RECOMMENDED: Full guide to Go Topless Day Bold and Naked Yoga Offering gender specific and co-ed classes, this would be a great way to get in touch with both your mind and body. Just be sure not to get in touch with the bodies of those around you. Gunnison Beach A quick jaunt will get you to New Jersey where you can check out Gunnison Beach which has a nude section. In fact, because it’s on federal land it’s the only legal nude beach in the state (and also has no restrictions on alcohol.) DenArt Here's an opportunity for you and a partner of your choosing to strip down to your underwear and paint each other in the dark with UV paint. Whether you're an artist, nudist or just someone who wants to slap paint on their partner in the dark, this event sounds like a blast. Zensuality Check out this Meetup group for various nude happenings, from drum circles to meditations. Currently on deck is nude yoga, but events come and go so be sure to check back for new additions. The Outdoor Co-ed Topless Pulp Fiction Appreciation Society If you like books, and being topless, this group is for you. Come watch or join in as the group celebrates both literature and topless-ness with reading in the park. Colonial House Inn It maybe a hotel, but treat yourself to a staycation and take advantage of the clothing-option

The New-York Historical Society is hosting a "Summer of Hamilton" this year

The New-York Historical Society is hosting a "Summer of Hamilton" this year

As the hit play Hamilton continues its domination of, well, everything, the New-York Historical Society is gearing up for its own “Summer of Hamilton” with an exhibition and more set to begin July 4. The two-month-long celebration in honor of the Ten-Dollar Founding Father will take place at the Upper West Side museum every weekend through August. RECOMMENDED: Full coverage of the 4th of July in NYC The events will feature a number of historical re-enactors (including the man of the hour) as well as Hamilton’s actual desk, a portrait of him by John Trumball and other antiquities. The “Summer of Hamilton” will also feature clips from the Broadway musical and Hamilton Fridays that will feature screenings of select films that are credited with inspiring the Broadway show.    Photograph: John Trumbull. Get amazing food for $6 or less at Taste of Times Square

Get amazing food for $6 or less at Taste of Times Square

Most New Yorkers avoid Times Square at all costs. And while this approach certainly gets them where they’re going quicker and saves them from punching an Elmo in the face, they also inadvertently bypass many great restaurants. However, June 6th the restaurants will be taking it to the streets for the Taste of Times Square. The annual food and music festival will feature over 50 area restaurants, live music and for the second year a beer garden serving up Heartland Brewery. The best part, aside from food, music and beer, is the cost. All items will range from two to six tickets and tickets are being sold individually for $1. I did the math and that means no food item will cost you more than six bucks, a steal by any measure, but certainly for Times Square.    Interested in blogging for Time Out? Contact us here

21 New York parks and beaches will have free Wi-Fi for five years

21 New York parks and beaches will have free Wi-Fi for five years

New York is a sprawling metropolis with very few outdoor spaces remaining. This is troubling to some, but thankfully the Park’s Department announced Tuesday that with AT&T they will be bringing free Wi-Fi to 21 parks for five years; so if, heaven forbid, you find yourself in the outdoors you won’t actually have to enjoy it. Since the program launched in 2011, some 8.6 million people have connected through the currently available Wi-Fi. The new rollout will bring the total number of Wi-Fi hotspots to 27 across all five boroughs, which should substantially add to the 8.6 million in coming years. Additionally, there will be an increase in the free solar powered charging stations bringing that number to 34 at 15 various parks and beaches in the area.
