Goth parties are having a moment in Miami

Goth parties are having a moment in Miami

In a city rampant with reggaeton music and scantily-clad bottle girls, you may be surprised to find a decidedly darker music scene in Miami: Goth parties. If visions of heavy eyeliner & doom-swaying dancers come to mind, you’re not wrong, but there’s a lot more to be discovered. Goth spans a range of sounds and styles, like any genre of music. Pop into a Goth party and you may hear familiar favorites like Bauhaus, Depeche Mode, or Siouxsie and the Banshees…or you may walk into something entirely different. Synthpop, ‘80s new wave, post-punk, industrial, darkwave, even bits of techno fall into the Goth category – all which translates into a deliciously diverse subculture.  So where to start? We spoke with two of Miami’s OG Goth party organizers – Shirl Legion of Malicia Goth Nights, and Lizz Dominguez of ZZ Bookings – for the skin on the local scene. Here’s where to find the best Goth parties in Miami this season. The 10 best things to do in the Bahamas

The 10 best things to do in the Bahamas

Without cheating via the internet (or further down this introduction), how many islands make up the Bahamas? If you said 700, congratulations! Only around 30 of these inhabited, so dust off the explorer’s hat and get to adventuring. We’ll make an intrepid explorer out of you yet. In all seriousness, the Bahamas is arguably the world’s best ‘choose your own adventure’ destination, a little slice (many slices, technically) of paradise that serves up crystal clear waters and colorful cocktails on a metaphorical conveyer belt. Le Plan B

Le Plan B

4 out of 5 stars

Dupleix metro isn't a stop that's highly visited amongst the majority of Parisians. However, it seems that quite a few people live here and like it rather well. And with the arrival of Plan B and O Coffeeshop across the road, the neighbourhood is swiftly developping. Opening in February 2017 in an old PMU bar, this artisan beer bar had all the airs and graces of really knowing its stuff. But don't worry, there aren't the normal gentrification prices here, with all the beers priced at €6.90 for 42cl. This certainly doesn't throw off clients who come lunch and evening to have a beer. "I didn't want to build a bar for beer geeks, just to offer good choice to those who appreciate it and stay a simple neighbourhood bar", says founder Nicolas. For beer lovers the choice is plentiful, with an impressive beer wall of 11 beers that change reguarly.  We can recommend the following: Trifal, a smooth lager which goes perfectly with a sandwich; Glutenberg, made from quinoa (gluten-free) franche du collier, and the somptuously sour Salty Kiss from Magic Rock. We won't go judging this area so quickly again...

Le Pavillon de la Reine

Le Pavillon de la Reine

4 out of 5 stars

Located on one of the most beautiful squares in Paris, the Pavillon de la Reine seems like it's always been there. Staying the night at this luxury hotel is a real treat, like a slice of paradise in the middle of Paris’s beating heart. Expect to feel at ease as soon as you walk in; with an entry situated between two art galleries and a cosy private terrace, the building gives off an alluring charm. It would be easy to while away the hours here, just taking in the surroundings. Or in the ground floor library, sipping fine wine or whiskey while flicking through one of the many antique books. Adding to the seventeenth century style, the team hired decorator Didier Benderli to give each room its unique character, modernising it without detracting from any of the elegance. The Queen’s Suite (Suite de la Reine) looks like an hotel particulier, complete with two bathrooms – one for the shower and one for the bathtub and its TV, separate toilets, a living room with sofa, desk and coffee table and of course the bedroom, TV and dressing room. Yes, you read that right – there are three televisions. Everything is designed with comfort in mind – the soundproofed silence is even a little unsettling at first. Then there’s the fruit basket, private parking, spa, wifi, minibar, room service, concierge, valet parking, 24-hour reception etc. This is the idea stay for travelers in search of discretion and luxury in the Marais and with irresistible charm. It would also be an incredible gift for

Mama Shelter

Mama Shelter

5 out of 5 stars

Rates: from €79 per night Added extras: The buffet breakfast is made daily with high-quality fresh produce. Services: Wifi, free film selection and a rooftop. Mama Shelter is a step in a new direction for any Paris fan. The vast room on the ground floor is modern and warm and from the outside, the place is impressive – the massive building faces the Flèche d’Or and you see the full impact once you’ve entered the reception area. Its spot-on decoration and book collection will make you feel at home at once. The rooms rock too – functional and well equipped, a special mention must go to the iMac which is both a radio and TV (with a selection of films to stream). It gives off a simple and effective charm. The night is all yours to test out the well-balanced mattress, unless you'd prefer to take time to enjoy the rooftop for a drink or dinner. Once the sun has risen, it’s time to make the most of the gargantuan breakfast and all the quality produce, including Dammann teas, succulent cakes and savoury dishes, which might as well be a brunch affair. This is definitely the sort of place you’ll never want to leave.

The Frog & Underground

The Frog & Underground

4 out of 5 stars

With its latest branch on rue Montmartre, Frog Pubs is dusting off the sometimes dull and hostile image of the traditional pub, which this area is far from lacking. Instead of carpet, the floor is tiled and the décor is contemporary with strong industrial vibes (brick, metal, glass) reminiscent of the former Parisian coffee shops. It’s the sort of modernity that does not spoil the conviviality expected from a pub, and make the most of it by heading to the top floor, with its comfy couches and huge counter. Not an ideal first date spot though, as it get’s very loud up there. The big plus is its artisanal beer menu, which is incredibly reasonably priced, with €5 pints during happy hour 5-8pm all week, then €7 thereafter. Try the excellent Tha...Wack! (a black IPA), Ginger Twist (a ginger ale) and Dunkelweizen (a brown wheat beer). In fact, you could try the whole menu and you wouldn’t be disappointed. Food is more pedestrian, with the usual greasy classics, like pork ribs, tacos and burgers – perfect for soaking up the pints. Prices are average for Paris (around €15 for a burger), but desserts seemed a little meagre for €6 price. Come to Frog & Underground for an apéritif or a post-dinner drink – or rather an after-party – they close at 2am or 5am from Thursday onwards. Another surprise bonus: the chic basement turns into a semi-club with a DJ set several times a week. Frog might be an eight-strong chain, but boy, do they know how to satisfy their punters. Cheers! Budo Store

For anyone who likes to wander, the 5th arrondissement is full of little surprises. Behind this elegant double door at 34 rue de la Montagne Sainte-Geneviève, is a famous haunt among martial arts aficionados: Budo Store. It also happens to be the birthplace of French karate, which developed under the masterful eye of Henry Plée, the famous 'mountain'. TRANSLATION: MEGAN CARNEGIE

Le Potager de Charlotte

Le Potager de Charlotte

4 out of 5 stars

Veganism has accrued a large Parisian following over the past few years as the general public become increasingly aware of the effects their culinary choices have on the world. Surfing in on this new culinary wave comes vegan eatery Le Potager de Charlotte, opened in October 2015. Here, everything from produce-sourcing to presentation is designed to reduce damage to the planet, while also doing good to your body. Avocado, turmeric, chickpeas, rice, sunflower seeds, aubergine, tomato, courgette, quinoa, cucumber, pomegranate, marinated tempeh (soy), melon, smoked paprika… the list of first-class ingredients goes on. The combinations of colours, shapes, textures and flavours are truly impressive, as is the subtlety of their transformations. The creativity of each dish is so delightful that we take pleasure in identifying and analysing each diverse ingredient. Strangely we find ourselves feeling more intelligent, more aware of what it is we’re eating, and therefore more responsible. Obviously, the freshness (and rarity) of the produce and all the kitchen work involved come at a price – the restaurant’s only drawback. The set menu costs about €28; still, it’s still worth it, considering the prices à la carte are around €8 for starters, €15 for a main and €8 for dessert. If you’re looking to eat healthily and well, lunch or dinner, this is a great vegan option.  TRANSLATION: LEONIE CATER

The Whisky Shop

The Whisky Shop

If you thought one whisky shop near the Place de la Madeleine wasn’t enough then you’re in luck. Clearly not intimidated by the competition, The Whisky Shop opened its doors in April 2016 just a few streets away from the already well-established Maison du Whisky. Although the boutique interior is appropriately chic and boasts a pretty impressive selection of bottles, it’s not as outwardly refined as its rival. But tant pis. Among the 300 or so labels here, particular attention is paid to the French whisky industry (think brands like Glann Ar Mor, Domaine des Hautes Glaces and Rozelieures), which has really taken off in recent years. But what really sets The Whisky Shop apart from its rival is in The Angel Room, a reference to ‘The Angel’s Share’, the amount of whisky that evaporates from the casks during its maturing period. In this room, regular free tastings and workshops are organised to sample the various whiskies they offer (check their Facebook for the events timetable). Upstairs, meanwhile, there’s another beautiful tasting room, done out in an elegant baroque style and sponsored by Johnny Walker House, which offers a fantastic view onto the Madeleine church. To top it all off, the prices aren’t stratospheric, starting from €40 for a good quality bottle. TRANSLATION: FLORA HUDSON

Restaurant Baudy

Restaurant Baudy

4 out of 5 stars

Though very much a tourist hot spot, Giverny – home of Claude Monet, a short train ride away from Paris – can still throw up all sorts of hidden treats. The Restaurant Baudy is a case in point: historically the preferred watering hole of many a visiting artist, still regularly inviting painters to its tables and the workshop in its gardens, and yet thankfully far removed from the main tourist trail. Today, the intimate restaurant also continues to welcome in-the-know passers-by for lunch and dinner inside its historic walls, which are quaintly decorated with old-fashioned woodwork, small canvasses and mismatched trinkets. The generous set menu of starter, main course and dessert (€28.50) is well worth your time. Their starter of goat’s cheese terrine with sweet peppers is packed full of subtle flavours, setting visitors up well for the hearty main of king prawns with rice and mixed veg. A distinctly average glass of Beaujolais is a slight blip, but it doesn’t detract from the exquisitely prepared lamb skewers – another simple yet moreish delight. Dessert wise, the profiteroles are excellently light and fluffy, while a baked apple with frangipane and vanilla ice cream wins no awards for originality (and yet still, impressively, manages to win us over). For inspiring views of the surrounding countryside, don’t forget to stop off at the café on the terrace on your way out. TRANSLATION: FLORA HUDSON

La Binouze

La Binouze

4 out of 5 stars

France may be years behind the US or the UK when it comes to craft beer but La Binouze is helping us make up for lost time. Benjamin and Thomas at La Binouze in the 9th arrondissement stock a vast range of local and international beers (prices range from €2.50-€25). Don’t expect to see any supermarket brands; this space is for inventive and exciting craft brewers only.   The boutique features around 700 varieties, ranging from Belgian classics to rare Italian brews and adventurous Scandinavian brands, to delight newbies and beer geeks alike. The owners are also on hand to offer advice, including on what to serve to impress at your next dinner party (that would be beers made with oats or rye, or some subtle seasonal versions). The distinctive label artwork on many of the bottles is part of the fun; we were persuaded by two Sirens (Soundwave and Blue Sky, Blue Sea), a German beer made by spontaneous fermentation, and a smoked beer from La Vallée du Giffre.  TRANSLATION: MARIA THOMAS

Beers & Records

Beers & Records

4 out of 5 stars

For a while it was tough to find a store selling LPs in Montreuil. But that’s a thing of the past now that Amadeo, a local who’s lived in the suburb for eight years, has established Beers & Records, offering both vinyl discs and a selection of artisanal beers, because the two go so well together. Inside we found records both old and new that span a wide range from soul, funk and jazz to electronic music, rock and hip hop (prices start at €2). Amadeo updates the stock continuously with new finds but even if you don’t stumble upon the perfect record, you can still take home some beer. The store stocks great brands like La Montreuilloise, La Parisienne, Deck & Donohue and La Trappe, all at prices that won’t break the bank.  According to Amadeo, the store will also soon start stocking bottles of Scottish whisky as well. Records and whisky – another perfect combination we can totally get behind. TRANSLATION: MARIA THOMAS

I tried skateboarding at a pro-level park in Miami. Here's how it went.

From my early days crowd surfing at Vans Warped Tour, to my more recent Hot Topic-themed birthday, to the septum ring my parents hate, I’ve always held a deep appreciation for punk culture. But skateboarding? Not in my wheelhouse.  Be it fear of falling (or fear of looking stupid in all that padding), I'd never actually hopped on a skateboard. But after my first lesson at SkateBird Miami in El Portal, I seriously can’t wait to hop back on.  MORE THAN A SKATE PARK Tucked away on an unsuspecting street off Biscayne Boulevard and NE 83rd, SkateBird is the definition of a hidden gem. While technically a pro-level park, it feels more like a giant community center. Parents are dropping off kids for lessons, regulars greet each other by name, locals are picking up pizza to-go. I immediately felt at home, something SkateBird Founder and CEO Joner Strauss says was built by design.  “SkateBird is a curated safe space for kids and adults to learn the culture,” he says. “In the past, to be part of the street skateboard culture, you had to hit the streets and there’s risks to that. Here, we’ve curated it so that Miami has a space for an Olympic sport, where people from all walks of life can coexist and grow safely.” Photography: Courtesy Skatebird GEARING UP After checking in at the front desk, I met Coach Cody, SkateBird’s Head Coach and Park Manager, for my trial class.

The Great Gig in The Sky", "Wish You Were Here", "Money", "Comfortably Numb"), ave

The 54th annual Coconut Grove Arts Festival promises to be bigger and wilder

The 54th annual Coconut Grove Arts Festival promises to be bigger and wilder

The Coconut Grove Arts Festival is really just another excuse to party. For three straight days, the eponymous waterfront neighborhood becomes a wild street parade of artists and art aficionados from around the world—and they’re all chasing a good time. “Early on, Coconut Grove was known as a laid-back, artistic, bohemian community with lots of galleries; but with so many artists, we needed three days to celebrate,” says festival president Monty Trainer. A couple of the area’s recurring participants include KROMA, a communal art space in West Grove, and FrameWorks, the festival’s longtime official framer (and pop-up exhibition space). Spectacle aside, the centerpiece of the weekend is the 360 exhibiting artists’ original work—from paintings to photographs to jewelry to sculpture. This year, 45 Miami artists (up from 41 in 2016) are expected to showcase their talents, including Linda Apriletti, who’s known for her oil paintings of the Florida Everglades, as well as newcomer Yeins Gomez, whose haunting welded-steel sculptures earned him a spot in the Havana Biennial Art Exhibition. Another highlight? Spanish-language celebrity chef Pepín plans to break a Guinness World Record for the largest arroz con pollo by cooking his own 4,000-pound dish. Sounds like a work of art to us! Entrances at McFarlane Rd, Mary St, SW 27th Ave and S Bayshore Dr (305-447-0401). Feb 18–20 10am–6pm. $15; under 12 free.   Want more? Sign up here to stay in the know.

Four Miami hotels with incredible luxury residences

Four Miami hotels with incredible luxury residences

Did your last hotel stay rouse your inner Eloise? If so, consider one of Miami’s luxury hotel residences for your next big move. You won’t get plush robes (those are still reserved for actual guests), but perks like valet parking and dog walking are available. The downside of living life on vacation? It’ll cost you—a lot. The average price of a one-bedroom apartment in a hotel residence is considerably higher than a comparable unit elsewhere (in Brickell the difference can be as much as $500,000). But if you have the Benjamins, it might be time to check into these lavish digs for good.   EAST, Miami   Hong Kong–based Swire Hotels’ first U.S. property is part of Brickell City Centre’s mixed-use complex. At EAST, Miami, tenants have guest perks without the commitment of ownership: The 352-room hotel boasts an inventory of one-, two- and three-bedroom residences available to lease—ranging from one month to one year. Homes exude Zen-like minimalism with floor-to-ceiling windows, full kitchens and ample living space.  Tenant perk: Complimentary valet and housekeeping services,   plus private elevators to access the residential floors.
