Sam Andrew was one of the Sixties pioneers of "The San Francisco Sound." As guitar player/singer and musical director of Big Brother & The Holding Company, he molded that sound which surrounded Janis Joplin in her rise to international acclaim. Of his early compositions, Call on Me and Combination of the Two have been two of Big Brother's most enduring classic tracks. In 1968, Andrew (and Janis) left Big Brother for nine months to form the Kozmic Blues Band.
Big Brother and the Holding Company reunited in 1987, and has continued to thrill audiences around the globe ever since. During the 1990s, in addition to touring with Big Brother, Andrew was involved with his solo project, The Sam Andrew Band. He was also Music Director of the musical "Love, Janis," based on the life of Janis Joplin.
After battling numerous ailments for over ten weeks, Sam passed away on February 12th.
Join Sam's family and friends in saluting this wonderful talent and exceptional man.
John Cooke, former road manager for Big Brother, will share some special Sam memories and a rare 60s film of the band. Music will be performed by George Michalski, The Sixties All Stars (Sam's musical contemporaries), and Big Brother & The Holding Company.
