San Francisco rites of passage

Just because you weren’t born at the old Children’s Hospital and didn’t attend Lowell High School doesn’t mean you haven’t experienced the real San Francisco rites of passage. All you need to do is complete at least half of this list of milestones—experiences, both good and bad, or knowledge gained. Fill out the checklist and brag about the results by sharing your score. 

1. Ridden the glass elevators at the St. Francis Hotel.
2. Seen a fight on Muni.
3. Participated in a fight on Muni.
4. Attended Film Night in the Park and stayed for the whole movie.
5. Seen Walter sing during public comment time at a Board of Supervisors meeting.
6. Know what the thunderstorm at the Tonga Room means.
7. Found a hypodermic needle at Ocean Beach.
8. Seen someone engaged in a sex act on BART.
9. Received a legitimate scare from the BushMan at Fisherman’s Wharf.
10. Waited in line at Tartine Bakery/Blue Bottle Coffee/Mama’s on Washington Square.



11. Chatted with Frank Chu.
12. Finally figured out the difference between the Sunset and the Richmond. (This is a trick. There is no difference.)
13. Referred to San Francisco as “the City.”
14. Fallen in love with the warm hug that is your first shot of Fernet.
15. Been stuck in an elevator at the Sutter-Stockton Garage.
16. Attended the Chinese New Year Parade and/or marched in the San Francisco Pride Parade.
17. Announced that you’re “completely over” Bay to Breakers.
18. Realized that the poop on the sidewalk might not be from a dog.
19. Have a friend with a Sutro Tower tattoo.
20. Spotted a celebrity at Tosca.



21. Taken a selfie with the “Jesus Loves You” man at the Powell Street Turnaround.
22. Enjoyed an Its-It.
23. Driven down the crooked part of Lombard Street.
24. Know where to find the real crooked street in Potrero Hill.
25. Experienced co-ed day at the Kabuki Day Spa.
26. Pointed out geographic or logistical inconsistencies in SF-filmed movies.
27. Had a pilot give you the downtown fly-by before landing at SFO.
28. Discovered you’re not nearly as experienced as you thought at the Folsom Street Fair.

29. Hugged a stranger when the Giants won the World Series (again).
30. Know what cioppino is.
31. Found a seat on the 30 Stockton.
32. Seen a beautiful woman vomit on Union Street.
33. Realized that your Uber driver was a year behind you in high school.
34. Argued a traffic ticket at the Hall of Justice.
35. Used the “bathroom” at Zeitgeist.
36. Know where to find the bison in Golden Gate Park.
