The Seattle Public Library says
Page to Screen: Hear the Story, See the Film, presents: “Blow Up,” Michelangelo Antonioni, director (1966); based on Julio Cortázar's short story "Blow Up" (1963).

The Sixties were a time of aesthetic revolution, from the magical realism of Cortázar’s experimental prose to Antonioni’s provocative playful adaptation, its brief nudity a cause for scandal and praise. Can you dig it?

We all know that many films are based on books, but you may be surprised to learn how many great movies are adapted from short stories. Join us for a unique look at adaptation in as we present a range of films, together with readings of the stories upon which they are based.

Page to Screen is a series of six Saturday matinee readings and screenings highlighting a variety of genres and styles, from the macabre horror of Tod Browning’s “Freaks,” based on Tod Robbins’ 1923 tale “Spurs,” to the moving psychological drama “In the Bedroom” featuring Sissy Spacek and Tom Wilkinson, adapted from Andre Dubus’ brilliant story “The Killings.” We have a pair of classic 1950s films directed by Stanley Kramer, both based on short stories: “High Noon” with Gary Cooper, and “The Wild One” starring Marlon Brando. The sixties are represented by a pair of more experimental films: Antonioni’s far-out countercultural watershed “Blow Up,” based on Julio Cortazar’s equally surreal story of the same name, and “The Swimmer,” a cult classic improbably adapted from the John Cheever story and featuring Burt Lancaster in the title role.

All events are free to the public, and no reservations are required. Events will be held on alternating Saturdays at 1 p.m. (seating at 12:30) in the Microsoft Auditorium, Level One, Seattle Public Library, Central Branch. 1000 4th Ave. Each event will begin with a full reading of the story by librarian Thrilling Tales reader David Wright, and then a brief intermission followed by a screening of the film based on that day’s story.
