Washington Community Action Network! says
The Seattle City Council committee considering the Move-in Fee Legislation that we've been pushing will vote on it NEXT TUESDAY SEPT 27TH AT 1:45PM, the legislation will be voted on in committee, the next step in the legislative process. It is incredibly important to show up and demonstrate your support! Please join us!

Why do we need this legislation? Well, Washington CAN! recently released a report, Seattle’s Renting Crisis: A Report and Policy Recommendations, that revealed disenfranchised communities are disproportionately impacted by unaffordable rent, landlord retaliation, unhealthy housing conditions, and various barriers to accessing housing.

In the report, one of the biggest barriers to accessing housing survey respondents struggled with is the high upfront costs (security deposit, last month’s rent, first month’s rent, and nonrefundable fees) many landlords require tenants to pay at move-in. Eighty-seven percent of survey respondents reported high upfront costs were a barrier to finding housing

This legislation would require landlords to accept a payment plan of up to six months for nonrefundable fees, security deposit, and last month’s rent. Passing this legislation would ease the financial burden so many renters face when moving. We need you to show up to help get this legislation out of committee!!!
