Writing for Hollywood today is about much more than understanding the 3 Act Structure and developing strong characters. It’s about generating high-concept ideas that generate ticket sales. Believe it or not, this is a learned art form. When I was admitted into the Writers Guild five years ago, the odds of selling a script to a major studio were lower than making it into Major League Baseball. This is Hollywood, and the competition is stiff. Indeed, Los Angeles is full of people who can craft well-structured stories, artful dialogue and compelling characters – but what separates aspiring writers from working writers is an ability to create and execute new and fresh concepts. Simply put, it’s all about the idea! This workshop will provide a forum for students to present fresh, high-concept ideas in a discussion format while receiving feedback. Students should come prepared to pitch and present their ideas to the class. After receiving critical feedback, students will have the opportunity to draft treatments for further review. By the end of the workshop, each student will have two fully-developed high concept ideas from which to create a screenplay or teleplay.
