The 13th of February will be the first Global Divestment Day involving 100s of actions around the world calling for divestment from the fossil fuel industry and a transition to a clean energy future. Here in Seattle the students of Divest UW will be hosting a mock marriage potentially binding the University of Washington to the coal industry. The marriage comes as part of Divest UW’s over two year-long campaign to get the university divested from fossil fuels.
So is the UW committed to continuing its investments in the deeply harmful coal industry or can we break that unholy union? To find out, come join the cast of Divest UW who will be made up of a motley crew of an ‘innocent’ UW bride, a coal-powered groom, corporations, solar panels, grim reapers, a priest, fossil fuel executives and conscientious objectors who will expose the moral corruption of the proposed union. Come wearing fossil-fuel-divestment orange or husky-pride purple, provide some objections to the wedding, and join us for an aerial photo afterwards to show the UW and the world that we need to cut ties to the most harmful industry in the world.
The work of the divestment campaign will be put to the test this March when the University’s Board of Regents is set to potentially decide whether the university will divest from the coal industry. So we need all of your support to show them which way to vote.
