Inspired by groups such as Venom, Slayer, Motörhead and Celtic Frost, Mayhem was founded in 1984 by guitarist Øystein Aarseth (known initially as "Destructor", later "Euronymous"), bassist Jørn Stubberud ("Necrobutcher") and drummer Kjetil Manheim, taking their band name from the Venom song "Mayhem with Mercy". This lineup recorded and released the demo Pure Fucking Armageddon. After its release, Aarseth, who used to play lead vocals, along with Stubberud, during first demo's studio rehearsals, recruited two session vocalists, Eirik Norheim ("Messiah") and Sven Erik Kristiansen ("Maniac"), in 1986 and 1987, respectively. Norheim played vocals only for a concert, which took place in April 1986 in Ski, and by the end of that year he had quit Mayhem. Whereas, with Kristiansen Mayhem recorded its first EP, Deathcrush, in 1987, and released it through Euronymous' newly formed label Posercorpse Music.
The initial 1,000 copy release of Deathcrush quickly sold out. It was later reissued in 1993 by the newly renamed Deathlike Silence Productions as a joint venture with Euronymous' Oslo specialist record shop Helvete (Norwegian for "Hell"). Manheim and Maniac left the band in 1988.

Inquisition (US) is a black metal band based in Seattle, Washington with origins in Colombia where the founder, Dagon, was living at the time. The band was fully realized in 1996 when Dagon left Colombia for the US and met Incubus who joined on drums. This line-up has remained stable for more than ten years. Their sound involves the combination of old school thrash metal, major guitar progressions with the depth and darkness of black metal's chaotic minor guitar progressions. Dagon's voice is very monotonous and chant like and does not sound like any voice typically used in black metal. Dagon has expressed that his vocal style is not meant to reflect that of a human, but rather that of an unseen entity in demonic form.

Black Anvil wield a brand of blackened metal that captures and combines the old-school spirit of the genre's titanic forefathers with modern day urban hostility on their debut album Time Insults the Mind. As unforgettable songs like 'Margin For Terror', 'Ten Talons Deep', and '777' demonstrate, the trio pummels listeners into submission with ten tons of riffs. Arguably the best metal band from NYC in over 10 years, BLACK ANVIL's brand of steel gives no quarter, takes no prisoners, and shows no mercy at all.
