Escape Velocity
In the summer of 2015, artist Megumi Shauna Arai traveled to Shikoku, Japan, with the help of the Prairie Underground Grant, to work in a 300 year old traditional paper making studio. Cross pollinating Prairie Underground's underlying inspiration, the palette and textiles of the SS16 Collection with the materials collected, imagery shot, and traditional craft practices that inspired her, this new body of work explores the potentially opposing sometimes inherent relationship between escape and freedom.

The program provides a stipend for artists to create a series of work in their chosen medium that incorporates items from our collection. Sample garments the artist selects can be used in any manner they desire. Prairie Underground’s products essentially become artist’s materials. By investing in the production of new art and inviting artists into our design process we hope to create more precious clothing and ultimately a better world.

Inspired by hand made clothing, uniforms and distressed garments, Prairie Underground produces a populist collection with subtle sensuality, conceived for durability and routine wear. The collection directly supports a diminishing network of sewing contractors in Seattle, Washington and has incorporated sustainable textiles made of hemp and organic cotton in every collection since 2005.
