About the Slam:

The Purple Slam: A Prince Tribute - a poetry slam in which each competing poet will read works from PRINCE! Let's honor a legend!

The Purple Slam is THREE rounds. Elimination per round based on rank. Three minute time limits. Each poet is given a 10 second grace period in each round, but after 10 seconds, are deducted points.

Pick your favorite Prince song and read it for a chance to get $20!!!!!

About the Featured Poet:

Wil Gibson was born from a good idea and a bottle of bourbon. He was raised in some of the poorest communities northern Illinois and eastern Arkansas have to offer. He now lives in Portland (the one in maine) and likes it a lot there (you probably would too). He writes too many love poems and not nearly enough of his novel. A proud (mistake prone) father of four who tries real hard and is still growing up.

He has performed with Regie Gibson (no relation), Andrea Gibson (no relation), Charlie Neville, Kurtis Blow, Brother Ali, mybrightestdiamond, Buddy Wakefield, Patricia Smith, and Anis Mojani (among others) in dive bars, high schools, colleges, poetry slams, libraries, living rooms, restaurants, prisons, coffee houses, and churches all across the country.

runner up at the 2010 and 2011 Arkansas Grand Slam
audience favorite 2010 Arkansas Grand Slam
three time (2008-2010) Portland, Maine/Port Veritas Grand Slam Champion
2010 New Hampshire/Slam Free or Die Grand Slam Champion
represented Portland, Maine five times (2008-2012) at the National Poetry Slam, including the 2011 team that made semifinals

His mentors have included Jason Carney, John S. Blake, Ryk McIntyre, Mike Macklin, Nick Fox, Billy Tuggle and Jay Davis, but you shouldn’t hold that against him.

He has toured as part of
Uncomfortable Laughter
(w/ Beau Williams, Kait Rokowski, and Ryan McLellan)
(w/ Beau Williams and Ryan McLellan)
is an honorary member of Chicago 4 Star Poetry
(w/ Billy Tuggle, Andi Kauth, Rik Vazquez, Melanie “George” Decelles, Ashley Hart, and Patricia Smith)
And a founding member of the Port Veritas artist collective.

He likes people and dogs a lot. He would like to pet your dog, talk to you a few minutes, and possibly give you a hug if that’s ok.

Next Week: Individual Poetry Slam Qualifier #1: top two poets move on to our Finals to compete to represent Seattle in Arizona!
