The event creator says

Tobi Stone has composed an evening of original music in homage to her mentor, late jazz saxophonist Bert Wilson. The evening will consist of two 45-minute sets, the first a duo of sax and piano (featuring Sumi Tonooka) and the second with the full band. There will be sitting and there will be dancing!

Tobi Stone's Texture Band blends African grooves with jazz harmonies. Prepare to have your assumptions challenged! The septet features Samantha Boshnack on trumpet, Naomi Siegel on trombone, Tobi Stone on saxophone, Sumi Tonooka on piano, Masa Kobayashi on bass, Thione Diop and Etienne Cakpo on drums.

Tobi says of her studies with Bert:
‘Bert would often tell stories about Monk, Trane, and hearing Charlie Parker for the first time. We’d watch videos of musicians like Ornette Coleman and Rahsaan Roland Kirk and he’d point out techniques, song forms and feels, the shapes of the solos, and the interactions between the band members. He’d give me ambitious assignments of learning hard tunes and exercises (always in all 12 keys), overtones, multi-phonics, altissimo; things I will be working on my whole life! Beyond history and technique, Bert encouraged me to stay true to my path and passion for music and to see how enriched the world is by music and art. I continue to be in awe of his example of transcending physical or situational limitations and building a legacy with unstoppable positivity. My life and musical evolution are still informed by Bert Wilson and I play music in great part thanks to him.'
