2015 YOUTH SPEAKS SEATTLE ALL-CITY YOUTH POETRY SLAM SERIES! Come slam your ♥ out! Since 2003, Youth Speaks Seattle has held an annual COMPETITIVE slam series to decide the top 5 poets to REPRESENT SEATTLE AT NATIONALS (Brave New Voices, look it up) and deliver a series of incredible events to INSPIRE the community and usher in the NEXT GENERATION of spoken word LEGENDS. 6:00 pm sign ups 6:30 pm slam starts 9:30 pm slam ends $5 youth $10 adults (no one turned away for lack of $$$) WHY SLAM? -to provide a stage, a mic, and a crowd to authentically witness young people in a world where they are often silenced -to showcase the incredible power, talent, and voice of young people in the 206 -to create a space of reverence for truth in a society of lies -to allow healing to take place through the power of stories -to HAVE A GOOD TIME! we gets it poppin tho.. IF YOU WANT TO SLAM: -do it!! this is a chance to be heard. to go to BNV yo!! -MUST be age 13-19 by july 2015 to be eligible -bring 3 (THREE) original poems to perform -each poem NO LONGER than 3 minutes and 40 seconds -come ON TIME, or early. no spot-saving -to be qualified for grand slam: you must place in the top 3 at a prelim OR wild card slam AND you must attend at least two other YSS events (writing circles & open mics) FEATURING: Troy Osaki is a spoken word poet and teaching artist from Seattle, WA. He writes to honor his family’s legacy, to share his personal experiences in hopes of creating authentic relationships with others, and to work in solidarity with all groups of marginalized people. He recognizes poetry as a tool for healing, empowerment, and revolution. After winning the 2012 Youth Speaks Seattle Grand Slam and the University of Washington Grand Slam, Troy went on to represent Seattle and his respective communities at the international youth poetry festival Brave New Voices and the College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational. In 2013, Troy competed in Kollaboration Star, the largest Asian American talent show in the nation.
