2015 YOUTH SPEAKS SEATTLE ALL-CITY YOUTH POETRY SLAM SERIES! Come slam your ♥ out! Since 2003, Youth Speaks Seattle has held an annual COMPETITIVE slam series to decide the top 5 poets to REPRESENT SEATTLE AT NATIONALS (Brave New Voices, look it up) and deliver a series of incredible events to INSPIRE the community and usher in the NEXT GENERATION of spoken word LEGENDS. 6:00 pm sign ups 6:30 pm slam starts 9:30 pm slam ends $5 youth $10 adults (no one turned away for lack of $$$) WHY SLAM? -to provide a stage, a mic, and a crowd to authentically witness young people in a world where they are often silenced -to showcase the incredible power, talent, and voice of young people in the 206 -to create a space of reverence for truth in a society of lies -to allow healing to take place through the power of stories -to HAVE A GOOD TIME! we gets it poppin tho.. IF YOU WANT TO SLAM: -do it!! this is a chance to be heard. to go to BNV yo!! -MUST be age 13-19 by july 2015 to be eligible -bring 3 (THREE) original poems to perform -each poem NO LONGER than 3 minutes and 40 seconds -come ON TIME, or early. no spot-saving -to be qualified for grand slam: you must place in the top 3 at a prelim OR wild card slam AND you must attend at least two other YSS events (writing circles & open mics) FEATURING: Gabriel Teodros // To know that another world is possible, and bring it to life through music; this has always been the mission of emcee Gabriel Teodros. He first made a mark with the group Abyssinian Creole, and reached an international audience with his critically-acclaimed solo debut Lovework. He has since set stages on fire all across the US, Canada, Mexico and Ethiopia; performing alongside the likes of Lupe Fiasco, Mos Def & Talib Kweli, Zap Mama, Digable Planets and Fishbone to name a few. 2012 saw the release of 2 more critically-acclaimed albums, Teodros' solo Colored People's Time Machine, as well as CopperWire's Earthbound; a space opera of a hip hop ride (set in the year 2089) that Teodros recorded with fellow Ethiopian-American artists Meklit Hadero and Burntface. In 2014 Teodros released 2 solo projects: Children Of The Dragon - another journey through time, Hip Hop, Ethiopian musical traditions and shifting homelands with Washington, DC-based producer AirMe, followed by Evidence Of Things Not Seen - a James Baldwin-inspired portrait of right now with Auckland, New Zealand-based producer SoulChef. In 2015, Teodros will make his speculative fiction debut with a story published in Octavia's Brood: Science Fiction Stories from Social Justice Movements (AK Press, April 2015).
