Alarm Will Sound says
Alarm Will Sound continues its second season of Alarm System through new collaborations with Mira Calix and Rashad Becker - Fan Site. On May 26th at 8pm at the Sheldon in St. Louis, Alarm Will Sound performs new music by both artists, as well as a new piece by Tyondai Braxton and work created through last season's Alarm System collaboration with avant garde jazz trio Medeski Martin & Wood.

Alarm System is intended to open Alarm Will Sound and our field to exciting creative artists outside of conventional classical-music networks. We want to create opportunities for great artists outside of our world to harness Alarm Will Sound's skills, techniques, and materials; and for us to learn from the techniques and practices of others. The primary goal of the project is the creation of new music emerging from aesthetic points of contact between contemporary classical music and other genres.

Mira Calix is an artist on the Warp record label. While her early music was almost exclusively electronic she now incorporates classical instrumentation into her work for performance, recording, and installations. Alarm Will Sound was attracted to her sense of play and experimentation. Mira's works include the Moving Museum, a public bus turned temporary sound art installation that followed the No. 35 route in Nanjing, China; Inside There Falls, a multi-sensory installation of paper, sound and movement that audiences were encouraged to explore and create their own narrative from hidden paper pathways. Mira is creating a movement and music piece for Alarm Will Sound based on ideas of elasticity and granularization.

Rashad Becker is a renowned engineer at Berlin's Dubplates & Mastering. A man who makes a living with his ears, Rashad's music is layered and shaped with extreme care. His ability to combine complex sounds in ways that sound clear and emotionally meaningful, as witnessed on his album Traditional Music of Notional Species Vol. 1, brought him to Alarm Will Sound's attention. Through this collaboration Alarm Will Sound will present several new works by Rashad. Several of these works will utilize soloists from the ensemble whose sounds will be manipulated with vocoders.
