Tower Grove Park says
Jimmy Joe, the resident carriage horse at Tower Grove Park, will retire at the end of October after 17 years of service. A free, public celebration in honor of Jimmy Joe will take place on Saturday, November 5, from 10am to 12pm at the Stone Shelter Pavilion. The family-friendly event will include light refreshments, pictures with Jimmy Joe, tours of the Park Stables (rarely on view to the public), and an honorary service award presentation. Carriage rides in the Park will continue in 2017 with a new horse.

Jimmy Joe and his handler, Jeff Kinman, have been fixtures in the Park since February 1999. A purebred, registered Clydesdale, Jimmy Joe has been a familiar sight at the front of one of the Park’s two Victorian carriages for visitors enjoying rides in the Park’s historic atmosphere. It is estimated that Jimmy Joe has offered approximately 2,700 rides during his tenure in the Park. The 21-year-old horse is being adopted by a private landowner in Wildwood, who has 26 years of experience caring for draft horses.

Tower Grove Park will make some necessary repairs to the 146-year-old stable during the winter before welcoming its new resident in March. The new horse, Moonshine, is also a purebred Clydesdale and is currently being trained to pull the Park’s carriages. Tower Grove Park’s carriage ride program is unique in St. Louis in that the horse and companion pony live on-site in the stable and have full-time, dedicated staff devoted to their care and wellbeing.

Carriage rides with Jimmy Joe can continue to be booked through the end of October by calling
