The best sandwich spots in Gothenburg: 5 places you need to try

The sandwich has become a serious contender for lunch and dinner, giving the burger a real run for its money. And on Sweden's west coast, there's no shortage of places taking bread culture to a whole new level.

There's no doubt that the sandwich has had a major culinary glow-up. But it took a long time before it really caught on. In modern times, the first steps came with Mack-SM, an industry event that has crowned Sweden's tastiest and most innovative sandwich every year since 2002.

As far back as ten years ago, people predicted that the American sandwich trend would arrive in Sweden, but things moved slowly. It's only in recent years that hearty sandwiches have become a regular feature on restaurant menus in the country's biggest cities.

Today, it's all about substantial sandwiches that are complete meals rather than just a quick snack. The bread is often sourdough, levain or bagel, while the filling is a carefully considered combination of ingredients that both contrast and complement each other. The filling should be the star of the show.

There are plenty of restaurants in Gothenburg with one or two sandwiches on the menu, but however good they may be, they don't qualify as dedicated sandwich spots. Asian buns and Mexican tacos also don't make the cut for this list.

Dig in: Here are Gothenburg's five very best sandwich spots!

1. Walk in the Park

What is it? Luxurious, delicious and crispy sandwiches served in a cosy, leafy park setting indoors. Walk in the Park opened in 2018 and offers summer vibes all year round thanks to its abundance of plants. Sandwiches have been on the menu for two years and are served during the daytime only, from Friday to Sunday.

Why we love it? Let's talk about the bread. It's called schiacciata, a flatbread from Tuscany that's baked at the company's own bakery in Alingsås. It's airy, crisp, thin and absolutely wonderful. Between two generously sized toasted slices is a generous, beautifully balanced filling, and everything is served on a wooden board with crisps.

There are three options to choose from: chicken, beef chuck and aubergine. The much-loved chicken sandwich is a symphony of slow-cooked chicken, spring onion, pickled red cabbage, gochujang and sesame mayonnaise, kimchi roasted sesame seeds, lettuce and parmesan. It's a beautiful thing.

Time Out tip: Also try the pizzas, biodynamic wines and craft beers from Stigbergets Brewery.

Linnégatan 10, Linnéstaden. All sandwiches cost SEK 145, including coffee and cake. Open Monday to Thursday from 17.00, Friday from 11.30 and Saturday and Sunday from 12.00.

2. Mackbaren 12

What is it? Hearty, beautifully made sandwiches packed with delicious fillings. Mackbaren began as a food truck at Grindstugan in 2024, launched by Filip Korsåsen, his brother and two friends. After its success, they quickly opened a permanent location at Nobelplatsen, followed by Mölndal in 2025 and finally this branch on Vallgatan, which you'll find right by the entrance to a fashion and interiors store.

Why we love it? The selection features airy sandwiches packed with ingredients and flavourful sauces, all served in crisp bread. The menu includes four permanent favourites: Italiano, Szechuan Beef, Korean Chicken and Aubergine Parm, plus a fifth option that changes every other week.

The clear favourite is Italiano, a wonderful creation filled with mortadella, stracciatella, rocket, tomato, parmesan, balsamic vinegar and plenty of homemade pistachio pesto. If you fancy a beer with your meal, there's Poppels Poppelino and Asahi Dry on tap, while wine and cocktails are also available.

Time Out tip: Mackbaren also collaborates with Spike Brewery in Gamlestaden's former slaughterhouse district, a wonderfully cosy setting that's well worth a visit.

Vallgatan 12, Inom Vallgraven (City Centre). A whole sandwich costs SEK 129 or half for SEK 79. Open Monday to Thursday 11.00-16.00, Saturday 12.00-20.00 and Sunday 12.00-16.00.

3. Hasselssons macklucka

  • 4 out of 5 stars
  • Recommended

What is it? Fluffy, filling and satisfying sandwiches packed with generous fillings. Hasselssons first made its name with a food truck in Skärhamn, later opened a permanent restaurant in Majorna and finally launched this popular sandwich hatch by Skanstorget in 2024. The small venue and its outdoor seating area often attract a crowd.

Why we love it? No decision fatigue here. The menu is short and focused, with just four choices: Mortadella, Buffalo Mozzarella, Reuben and Flavour of the Month. The bread is a thin, crisp Persian bread, while the fillings deliver perfectly balanced flavour combinations.

The bestselling Reuben features cheddar gratinated porchetta, caramelised onion, fermented white cabbage, dijonnaise, parsley, cornichons and Grana Padano, although Flavour of the Month was the real star when we visited. Whatever you choose, you're guaranteed a seriously satisfying sandwich.

Time Out tip: Don't miss Hasselsson's outlet in Stora Saluhallen, where they serve Asian-inspired sandwiches made with thousand-layer bread. The bread has gone viral on social media and is reminiscent of a fried croissant.

Skanstorget 10, Haga/Linnéstaden. Expect to pay SEK 109-135 for a sandwich. Students receive a 25 percent discount. Open Wednesday to Saturday 11.00-16.00, Sunday 12.00-16.00.

4. Smöriga bröd

  • 3 out of 5 stars
  • Recommended

What is it? Hefty oven grilled sourdough sandwiches packed with generous fillings. Smöriga bröd opened in 2023 by Alex Atak, who is said to have been the first to introduce the American classic Reuben to Gothenburg. It's located right in the middle of Heden, and its pleasant outdoor terrace is the perfect place to sit back and watch people and football training sessions in the sunshine.

Why we love it? These are serious sandwiches: hearty, salty and incredibly filling. The signature Reuben comes with beef brisket, sauerkraut, Russian dressing and cheddar between two thick butter fried slices of sourdough. Other bestsellers include Chicken Bacon Cream and a classic Tuna Melt, while vegetarians can choose from the Mushroom Sandwich or Grilled Cheese. There's also a small but reliable selection of beer and wine.

Time Out tip: Smöriga bröd doubles as a lively meeting place. Keep an eye on its channels as some evenings feature quizzes, stand-up comedy and DJ sets played on classic Technics 1210 turntables.

Sten Sturegatan 1, City Centre. Expect to pay between SEK 125 and 165 for a sandwich. Open 11.30-15.00 and 17.00-19.00. Sometimes open later in the evenings.

5. Jimmy & Joan's New York

  • 3 out of 5 stars
  • Recommended

What is it? A New York-inspired bagel bar that channels yellow taxis, city buzz and Broadway shows. Jimmy & Joan's offers more than a dozen different bagels, with salmon, omelette and cream cheese among the most popular fillings. Every bagel can be made gluten free or lactose free, and there are vegan options too.

Why we love it? Just bread with a hole in the middle? Think again. A good bagel should be deliciously chewy with a crisp exterior, achieved by boiling it before baking, and that's exactly the kind of artisan bagels you'll find here. The sandwiches are fresh, carefully made and seriously tasty, although slightly smaller than the more substantial offerings at the city's dedicated sandwich restaurants.

Two of the biggest bestsellers are Pioneer, with salmon, and Flat Iron, with turkey breast, both served with salad, tomato and cream cheese among other fillings. Drinks include soft drinks, lemonade, coffee and tea.

Time Out tip: Save room and don't miss the dessert bagels or the incredible American cheesecake.

Teatergatan 22, Lorensberg/City Centre. From SEK 78-145. Open Tuesday to Friday 11.00-16.00, Saturday and Sunday 10.00-16.00.
