Visby is wonderful, but venture just a little beyond the city and life slows down even more. Whether you’re after a nature escape or an unusual attraction, a short outing or a full day trip, there’s plenty to discover across Gotland.

Thanks to the island’s short distances, it’s quick and easy to get around. And if you’re staying in Visby, some of these spots are even within easy cycling distance.

At Södra Hällarna, you can wander among dramatic coastal cliffs, while in Tofta, Berså serves up homemade treats alongside inspiring interiors shopping. Further afield on Fårö, the cult favourite Kutens Bensin draws visitors with its nostalgic ’50s setting, great food and live music.

It’s on these little detours, among rusty vintage cars, cafés scented with cardamom buns and enchanting forests, that Gotland reveals some of its most charming sides.

1. Södra Hällarna

What is it? Just south of Visby, the Södra Hällarna nature and outdoor recreation area offers spectacular coastal scenery. Why go? Södra Hällarna is perfect for running, walking or cycling through varied landscapes of dramatic cliffs, enchanting woodland and a pebble beach. For Visby locals, it’s a favourite spot for a lunchtime stroll, an evening picnic, a bike ride or a walk with the dog. Its proximity to Visby also makes it incredibly easy to reach.
