Cézanne: Paris-Provence

'100% Cézanne!' boasts the publicity material for this exhibition of work by the influential post-Impressionist painter – a tacit admission of how padded such big-name artist shows tend to be in Tokyo. The National Art Center has done an impressive bit of hustling here, drawing together 90 works from a total of 40 museums around the world, including the Musée d'Orsay and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The resulting show is the most comprehensive Cézanne exhibition that Japan has ever seen, focussing on the artist's relationship with Paris and his native Provence, and comes complete with a reconstruction of his studio.
