Based in New York since 1998, performance artist Ei Arakawa takes over Roppongi's newly re-opened Taka Ishii Gallery with 'Tryst', an installation consisting of five independent LED screens that display paintings by the Gutai group of avant-garde artists. All the works referenced were produced around 1959 – the year when Jiro Yoshihara's radicals first began to be recognised internationally. Forming a connection between Gutai’s strategy for global success and the Art Basel fair as a symbol of the contemporary art market, Arakawa contextualises it all within the framework of a musical.
